The Dough, though, at Osso & Kristalla

Chefs getting work in!

Last week, the Houston Food Blogger Collective was invited to get a first glimpse of Potente, an upscale Italian restaurant by Astros owner, Jim Crane.  Instead of eating at Potente, we moved next door to their family-friendly, trattoria-type establishment, Osso & Kristalla. What I did not expect was to be so wowed by the restaurant. Osso & Kristalla was so good!!!!! Below are some of the dishes we tried:

-Arancini with Marinara
-Kale, apple, crispy pancetta, pine nuts, ricotta, and preserved lemon dressing
-Steak salad, arugula, shaved fennel, balsamic rosemary dressing
-Margherita pizza (roma tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, oregano and organic basil)
-Quattro formaggio pizza (mozzerella, fontina, blue cheese, pecorino, truffle oil)
-Onion jam pizza (four cheeses, onion jam, and prosciutto)

Honestly, it's hard to mess up Arancini, in my opinion. This is probably because my weakness is creamy carb stuff, and I love me some creamy rice fried in a ball and stuffed with melty mozzarella. Good flavor, pretty solid dish.

The kale salad kinda gave me mixed feelings- I'm generally not a fan of kale salads because of it's tough and dry texture, but the creamy pile of ricotta hidden underneath all the dinosaur leaves made it pretty pleasant. I could have done with some more pancetta, but I can eat pancetta off a shoe......

All the other dishes were pretty good, but the real star was the pizza. I used to work in downtown for a couple of years, and it was nearly impossible to find a good pizza (except Bombay!). Fast forward a couple years, and I no longer work in downtown, coincidentally at the same time a good pizza arrives.

The amazing onion jam pizza

The amazing onion jam pizza

Osso & Kristalla's pizza dough was slightly reminiscent of the legendary dough at Coltivare. Both doughs are chewy, airy, and crispy on the outside. Very very awesome pizza. Now let's elevate it even more...add four cheeses, sweet onion jam, and salty prosciutto, and you get the more-than-incredible onion jam pizza at Osso & Kristalla (we're not sure if this is the name of the pizza, as it was not on the menu, but look for onion jam in the pizza section!). I cannot say enough great things about this pizza!! You have the salty richness from the four cheeses, the sweetness of the onion jam, and the prosciutto to make it all savory again. I would come back just for this pizza. Over and over again.

Everything from the breads to the drinks to the pizzas were all so great. The Potente side seemed really upscale, dark, fancy, dress-codeish, so if that's your thing, you may enjoy that side more. As for me, I'm pretty happy with the casual vibe at Osso & Kristalla. Make sure to catch them and their onion jam pizza if you're ever in downtown and wanting to take your tastebuds on an adventure! Trust me on this one. You'll still be dreaming about that pizza a week later.....sigh.

May the ice cream be ever in your flavor. NOMaste.
